Prophecy - a Complete Review

Well, it's that time again. A time of turkeys, presents and mistletoe... oh wait, no. It's much more important than that, it's the time the new Magic set is about to be released. The spoilers still have that fresh smell of casting cost mistakes to them and I can't resist giving my opinion on the cards.

As usual, I'll give each card two ratings on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best. One for its tournament quality and one for its fun potential. Take the tournament part with a grain of salt though, because I'm mostly a casual player. But the fun rating is definitive, of course.

And if you buy that, I've got a bridge to sell you.

As usual, the spoiler is from MTGnews.com. The review is split into several sections for ease of reading:

Conclusion

Well, that about wraps it up for Prophecy. I'll finish with a few numbers:

Tournament ratings:
1: 32
2: 53
3: 33
4: 20
5: 5

That means very few of these cards are tournament worthy if I'm right. Most of them fall somewhere between mediocre and bad. That's quite normal for Magic expansions. For every good card, there have to be a lot more that nobody would consider taking to a tournament.

Fun ratings:
1: 29
2: 19
3: 32
4: 50
5: 13

This looks a lot better. Most cards fall between mediocre and good, which should make this a fun set to explore.

One of the problems I noticed when writing this is that a lot of the cards seem to be overcosted. It's almost as if the makers decided that magic needed to slow down, so they added 1 to the casting cost of (almost) every card.

The quality of the rares is a bit disappointing as well, but I'm impossible to please when it comes to that anyway. If the rares are bad, I'm disappointed when I open one. If the rares are good I'm frustrated because it's too expensive to get all of the ones I want.

I better hurry up and order a box before I spend my money on less important things, like food and internet access.

Onslaught

Onslaught continues the story of Kamahl, who struggles to cope with what it means to be a druid. At the same time, he has to help his sister, Jeska, who has been transformed into Phage, a being that can kill with a mere touch. At the same time Ixidor, an illusionist with the ability to shape reality is out to kill Phage for killing his one true love. Who will find her first?
