1. A Word from our Editor

Happy New Year everyone! Well, except for those from China or the Middle East or anywhere else a different dating system is used. Those I wish a happy New Day!

CasualMTG has been attracting a steady stream of new visitors since its start and hopefully that trend will continue in 2002. And it should, because, according to WotC estimates, there are a lot more casual players than tournament players, yet there still are very few sites for them.

Our resolutions for 2002 include bringing you a more frequent newsletter and more regular articles. Of course it'd help if more people would send in articles (hint, hint!) Hopefully, we'll also be able to bring you a message board in 2002. The homemade card index could also do with more automation, but don't hold your breath. We're already way behind on adding them!

Speaking of new articles, we're also eager to get some reviews of Magic novels and strategy books. A lot of people have asked if certain books in our library are worth buying. The truth is: we don't know. There are so many fiction and non-fiction books available for Magic, it's impossible to read them all. Well, maybe not impossible, just way too time-consuming and expensive.

You can help us out if you have read any Magic book, by writing a review for it and submitting it to us (see the Submissions link on the site). In case you're not sure how to write a review, here's a list of things any review should have:

1) A description of what the book contains (in the case of a fiction novel, write a summary that doesn't give away the ending)
2) Things you disliked about the book
3) Things you liked about the book
4) A conclusion: do you think it's worth buying?

It's as simple as that!

But anyway, on to the meat of the newsletter!

2. Quick Quiz

a) Which card has the flavour text: "These are its last days. Its doom to be remembered only until the hunters hunger again."?
b) There are three cards which have the same name as an expansion. Can you name them?
c) (Cryptic) What card do you get when you count the rings of a tree?

For the answers, look at the end of this newsletter.

3. New Articles

The Magic Chest 33: Rith's Charm
by Patrick Scheele
http://www.casualmtg.com/article1130.html
"Recently, Wizards of the Coast have printed a lot of new Saproling cards, so it's time to build a Saproling theme deck and hope our friends' laughter will turn to awe when they get overrun by the mighty Saprolings!"

Opposition - Desolation Angel Deck
by Mordechai Treiger
http://www.casualmtg.com/article1129.html
"When thinking about Desolation Angel in context of an Opposition Deck, the idea didn't sound exciting at all. However, after giving these two cards more thought, I set out to build a Desolation Angel deck that utilized Opposition."

The Magic Chest 32: Mirari
by Patrick Scheele
http://www.casualmtg.com/article1128.html
"Mirari plays a big part in the Odyssey novel as a powerful artifact that all the major players want to possess. The set's designers tried to make the card very desirable as well, by giving it the rare spell-copying ability previously only seen in Fork."

A Complete Review of Odyssey
by Patrick Scheele
http://www.casualmtg.com/article1119.html
"A card-by-card review of Odyssey, the new standalone Magic: the Gathering expansion. Find out which card to look out for and which ones to watch out for. You'd better sit down for this one, because it's huge!"

4. Your Feedback

Sadly, a lot of old feedback was lost due to a software glitch. There were some compliments, which we were very grateful for, as well as a few corrections to some of the information in our library.

Someone also asked about the Buffy reviews I used to do. At the moment, they aren't available online. If I ever get around to giving them their own spot on a website again, I'll mention it here.

One person asked us to write more articles about type 2, because a lot of casual players limit themselves to that card pool. We'll try, but that's not always easy, especially because type 2 changes 3 times a year, so old articles become outdated faster.

There seems to be some interest in strategy articles as well, to answer questions like how a mana curve works exactly and how to tell if a card has the potential of giving you cardadvantage. We'll try to get a few more strategy articles for you up in the new year. Meanwhile, if you think you can answer these questions in depth and easy enough for a beginner to understand, why not try writing an article about them yourself? We'll be happy to put it up if it conforms to our submission guidelines.

5. Did You Know...?

The next set will be called Torment and will have two new mechanics, Nightmare and Madness. If that sounds very dark, the set itself is even darker: it contains 40 black cards, yet only 21 white and green ones. That'll be an interesting experience in booster drafts.

To whet your appetites, here are two of the card from Torment:

Hypnox 8BBB Rare
Creature — Nightmare Horror
8/8
Flying.
When Hypnox comes into play, if you played it from your hand, remove all cards in target opponent’s hand from the game. When Hypnox leaves play, return the removed cards to their owner’s hand.

Obviously, if you ever manage to cast this guy, you're almost certainly going to win. How is your opponent going to get rid of this guy if he can't use the cards in his hand?

Plagiarize - Rare
Instant
3U
Until end of turn, if target player would draw a card, instead that player skips that draw and you draw a card.

This one doesn't look too good at first sight, but keep in mind that, even if you only use it to steal your opponent's draw phase from him, it'll still get you one card and cost your opponent one. But, Plagiarize becomes truly awesome with a card like Windfall cast after it. Your opponent discards his hand and draws nothing. Instead, you draw twice the number of cards, while your opponent sits with an empty hand. That's gotta hurt!

6. Quiz Answers

a) Endangered Armodon
b) Visions, Prophecy and Apocalypse (Torment will be the fourth)
c) Wood Sage (when you count the rings of a tree, you get the wood's age)
