Onslaught - a Complete Review (land)

312. Barren Moor, Land Common
Barren Moor comes into play tapped.
T: Add B to your mana pool.
Cycling B (B, Discard this card from your hand: Draw a card.)

==> FUN: 3
A slight variation on the Urza's Saga cycling lands. The cycling costs one mana less, but it has to be of a specific color. That makes it harder to use these cycling lands to splash an extra color into a deck, because you'll tie up that color just to cycle your extra lands.

--
313. Bloodstained Mire, Land Rare
T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Bloodstained Mire: Search your library for a swamp or mountain card and put it into play. Then shuffle your library.

==> FUN: 2
Similar to the Mirage fetchlands, but the Onslaught version can be used for mana immediately. The price for that extra speed is one life. I like the Mirage fetchlands for two reasons. The first is that they get you the color of mana you need and thin your deck at the same time. The Onslaught lands do that as well. The second reason is that they aren't rare. The Onslaught lands are.

--
314. Contested Cliffs, Land Rare
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
G, T: Choose target Beast you control and target creature an opponent controls. Each creature deals damage equal to its power to the other.

==> FUN: 4
Well, well. Triangle of War from Visions was almost playable, because green has so much trouble dealing with creatures. Contested Cliffs does the same thing as Triangle of War, potentially every turn. A great, cheap, reusable way to get rid of annoying creatures. The only downside is that you need to play with beasts, but there are plenty of those in Onslaught and previous sets that are playable.

--
315. Daru Encampment, Land Uncommon
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
W, T: Target Soldier gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

==> FUN: 4
It's no Pendlehaven, but it's still pretty nice in soldier decks. Just the threat of Daru Encampment will make blocking decisions harder for your opponent.

--
316. Flooded Strand, Land Rare
T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Flooded Strand: Search your library for a plains or island card and put it into play. Then shuffle your library.

==> FUN: 2
See Bloodstained Mire.

--
317. Forgotten Cave, Land Common
Forgotten Cave comes into play tapped.
T: Add R to your mana pool.
Cycling R (R, Discard this card from your hand: Draw a card.)

==> FUN: 3
See Barren Moor.

--
318. Goblin Burrows, Land Uncommon
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
1R, T: Target Goblin gets +2/+0 until end of turn.

==> FUN: 4
Unlike Daru Encampment, Goblin Burrows can't save your creature, but it can help kill your opponent and his creatures faster. With Goblin Burrows in play, a 1/1 goblin can suddenly trade with a 3/3 elephant.

--
319. Grand Coliseum, Land Rare
Grand Coliseum comes into play tapped.
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Grand Coliseum deals 1 damage to you.

==> FUN: 1
Grand Coliseum is almost a reprint of City of Brass. The difference is, that Grand Coliseum can't be used immediately (which can be very annoying if you're waiting for that extra mana to be able to cast something important). The trade-off is that Grand Coliseum isn't going to hurt you nearly as much as City of Brass. It'll probably be a useful card, but it's too bland for a rare.

--
320. Lonely Sandbar, Land Common
Lonely Sandbar comes into play tapped.
T: Add U to your mana pool.
Cycling U (U, Discard this card from your hand: Draw a card.)

==> FUN: 3
See Barren Moor.

--
321. Polluted Delta, Land Rare
T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Polluted Delta: Search your library for an island or swamp card and put it into play. Then shuffle your library.

==> FUN: 2
See Bloodstained Mire.

--
322. Riptide Laboratory, Land Rare
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
U, T: Return target Wizard you control to its owner's hand.

==> FUN: 5
It's always good to be able to save your Prodigal Sorcerers and other utility creatures from destruction. Riptide Laboratory probably works especially well with Thalakos Seer, where it becomes reusable card drawing when you need it.

--
323. Seaside Haven, Land Uncommon
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
WU, T, Sacrifice a Bird: Draw a card.

==> FUN: 5
Fun with Welkin Hawk, which replaces itself and bird token generators, like Battle Screech and Ordered Migration. Even without tricks, Seaside Haven can get a bird deck plenty of card advantage.

--
324. Secluded Steppe, Land Common
Secluded Steppe comes into play tapped.
T: Add W to your mana pool.
Cycling W (W, Discard this card from your hand: Draw a card.)

==> FUN: 3
See Barren Moor.

--
325. Starlit Sanctum, Land Uncommon
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
W, T, Sacrifice a Cleric: You gain life equal to that Cleric's toughness.
B, T, Sacrifice a Cleric: Target player loses life equal to that Cleric's power.

==> FUN: 4
Starlit Sanctum doesn't seem as good as it could be. Clerics aren't known for their high power or toughness. Also, cleric decks should have enough lifegain and damage prevention to make the first ability almost pointless. A cleric deck probably isn't going to go for a speedy win either, so the second ability isn't that great either. Of course, on Starlit Sanctum these abilities are secondary to the generation of mana, so they don't have to be great, as long as they come in handy occasionally.

--
326. Tranquil Thicket, Land Common
Tranquil Thicket comes into play tapped.
T: Add G to your mana pool.
Cycling G (G, Discard this card from your hand: Draw a card.)

==> FUN: 3
See Barren Moor.

--
327. Unholy Grotto, Land Rare
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
B, T: Put target Zombie card from your graveyard on top of your library.

==> FUN: 4
Unholy Grotto makes sure your next draw is something useful, instead of a land or unneeded utility spell. It's not as good as Volrath's Stronghold, though, because it's limited to zombies and most zombies aren't very interesting. There are a few fun ones, like Gravedigger and Grave Defiler that can net you card advantage.

--
328. Windswept Heath, Land Rare
T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Windswept Heath: Search your library for a forest or plains card and put it into play. Then shuffle your library.

==> FUN: 2
See Bloodstained Mire.

--
329. Wirewood Lodge, Land Uncommon
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
G, T: Untap target Elf.

==> FUN: 4
Use on Priest of Titania or Wellwisher for fun and profit.

--
330. Wooded Foothills, Land Rare
T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Wooded Foothills: Search your library for a mountain or forest card and put it into play. Then shuffle your library.

==> FUN: 2
See Bloodstained Mire.

Onslaught

Onslaught continues the story of Kamahl, who struggles to cope with what it means to be a druid. At the same time, he has to help his sister, Jeska, who has been transformed into Phage, a being that can kill with a mere touch. At the same time Ixidor, an illusionist with the ability to shape reality is out to kill Phage for killing his one true love. Who will find her first?
